Spotlight On:
Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Communications Office
Crisis:
- A youth in the Department's care had died due to an untreated case of appendicitis
- There were ongoing investigations by Miami-Dade & Palm Beach County Grand Juries
- A select House Committee was appointed to scrutinize Department
- This caused the media to go into a feeding frenzy

Actions:
- I added valuable input to crisis management processes
- Under extreme pressure, I successfully managed numerous daily, often hostile, media inquiries
- I crafted and placed responses to negative newspaper editorials and columns
- Department responses required immediate turn-around; I upgraded and managed the press release distribution process
- Using my contacts in the S. Florida press, I successfully placed Op-Ed pieces, even those that were longer than newspaper guidelines
- All of this required my working in close conjunction with Governor Bush's press office on issue framing

The Center for Creating the Future
Opportunity: Non-profit think tank's CEO needed a promotional "jump-start"

Actions:
- When I started this project, there was no real "Brand Identity" at The Center, so the first task was to create it — which required a lot of brainstorming with the CEO
- To implement the brand, I wrote a simple and flexible marketing and
communications plan that focused on making the CEO a "known expert
on creating the future"
- To enhance The Center's credibility, I worked with the CEO to establish monthly meetings on "Creating the Future of Downtown Ft. Lauderdale" which attracted and still attract many community leaders to discuss a broad array of topics related to the city's path
- With an eye on maintaining brand identification, I conceived, created and managed The Center's web site as a resource for people interested in looking at the future in new ways

Spotlight on:
Florida Medical Association, South Florida Field Office
Actions:
- I built, expanded and coordinated the communications of an effective
grassroots activist network of physicians and medical auxiliary members
in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach & Monroe Counties

- On behalf of the Florida Medical Political Action Committee (FLAMPAC), I consulted with numerous political campaigns and candidates who were friends of the medical community
- When the Florida Legislature was in session, I lobbied on medical issues and used the grassroots network to affect key legislators' votes at crucial points in the process
- As the point person for relations between the FMA and the county medical societies, I managed difficult, often contentious, relationships and kept everyone on message
- As a part of our overall strategy, I wrote member-motivating political articles for county medical journals
- At crucial times, I edited and authored position papers, blast-fax message and other FMA publications that supported our overall communications effort
